Structure designed through freeze-drying
Freeze-dried tablets use a formulation and drying process to create a porous solid structure. Lyophilized tablets and oral lyophilisates are related terms used in technical contexts. Orally disintegrating tablets describe a broader category: not every ODT is freeze-dried.
The formulation and the process belong together
Ingredient properties, matrix composition and process conditions influence the resulting structure. Mechanical integrity, moisture sensitivity, disintegration and the ability to remove a unit from its pack need to be assessed together.
Evaluate before making a performance promise
- Assay and uniformity of the target ingredient.
- Disintegration measured using a documented method.
- Residual moisture and sensitivity to humidity.
- Handling, transport integrity and primary pack compatibility.
- Stability in the final proposed packaging.
A collaborative development route
Begin with the ingredient, dose, target use and intended market. The project can then define formulation screening, prototype evaluation and the process information needed for a scale-up review. Food, supplement and pharmaceutical projects require their own category and responsibility assessment.
What we consider
Matrix & process
Evaluate the formulation and freeze-drying route together.
Product evaluation
Review assay, moisture, disintegration and handling.
Pack compatibility
Protective packaging forms part of the product design.
