PLATFORM SELECTION
We start with your ingredient, intended dose and user experience. A slim film and a porous freeze-dried tablet offer different development routes; feasibility comes before a format commitment.
Oral strips, oral thin films and orally disintegrating films are thin, flexible oral formats. Development brings together a film-forming matrix, ingredient dispersion, taste and the handling of each individual strip.
Lyophilized tablets use a freeze-drying route to create a porous solid matrix. For an orally disintegrating tablet concept, we evaluate mouth disintegration alongside strength, moisture sensitivity and pack opening.
DEVELOPMENT QUESTIONS
| Consideration | Oral film | Freeze-dried tablet |
|---|---|---|
| Physical format | Thin, flexible strip | Porous tablet-shaped matrix |
| Process focus | Mixing, coating, drying and cutting | Liquid preparation, filling, freezing and drying |
| User experience | Taste, mouthfeel, strip size and handling | Taste, disintegration and removal from the pack |
| Protection | Moisture barrier, seal integrity and strip release | Moisture barrier, seal integrity and mechanical protection |
| Feasibility | Dose, ingredient properties and matrix compatibility | Dose, ingredient properties and drying behavior |
APPLICATION DIRECTIONS
Explore an oral format around a defined nutrient specification, intended unit dose, flavor profile and target market. Loading and sensory acceptability are assessed together.
Review extract identity, marker content, bitterness, color and moisture sensitivity before deciding whether a film or freeze-dried matrix is an appropriate route.
For probiotic or postbiotic concepts, clarify strain or ingredient identity and live or non-live status. Processing suitability and storage requirements need ingredient-specific evaluation.
COMMON QUESTIONS
They are overlapping commercial terms for film formats. We clarify the exact intended use, composition and disintegration requirements in the project brief. ‘Oral film’ is the standard spelling.
No. ODT describes a disintegrating dosage form; it does not identify a single manufacturing method. Our focus here is the lyophilized, or freeze-dried, development route.
No. Disintegration, dissolution and absorption are different questions. A product-specific assessment is needed before making performance or route-of-absorption claims.
