Oral Film Technology

A thin, portable oral format, developed around ingredient compatibility, dose, taste and the way it will be used.

A small format. A complete formulation challenge.

Oral films bring an active ingredient into a thin, unit-dose format. Also described as oral strips or orally disintegrating films, they are a development option for brands exploring a convenient alternative to conventional formats.

The starting point is your ingredient specification and intended daily serving. Film dimensions, total dry weight and measured active content are different quantities. A useful brief makes each one explicit.

Choose the process around the product

Conventional film-forming and freeze-dried film approaches need to be considered separately. Ingredient sensitivity, dispersion, film integrity, taste, moisture and packaging all influence the route. A process should be selected through formulation evaluation rather than a universal promise about performance.

From ingredient to prototype

A collaboration can begin with a non-confidential ingredient specification, a target dose and intended market. Feasibility review identifies what needs to be tested before a sample program is agreed.

  • Ingredient identity, marker assay and excipient compatibility.
  • Loading, uniformity, thickness and handling characteristics.
  • Flavor, mouthfeel and disintegration under defined test conditions.
  • Moisture protection, primary packaging and stability planning.

One important distinction

Disintegration, dissolution and absorption are different outcomes. A film breaking up in the mouth does not establish transmucosal delivery or a specific human effect. Any such claim needs product-specific evidence.

What we consider

Formulation fit

Start with ingredient identity, dose and intended use.

Taste & handling

Consider flavor, mouthfeel, flexibility and uniformity.

Packaging

Evaluate unit-dose protection and product stability.
